The NIDCR Division of Extramural Research (DER) plans, develops and manages basic, translational and clinical research supported by grants, cooperative agreements and contracts in dental, oral and craniofacial health and disease. The goal is to capture the most promising discoveries and emerging technologies for rapid translation to clinical applications for improving the health of all Americans.

Our diverse portfolio includes oral microbiology and infectious diseases; immunology and immunotherapy; oral complications of AIDS, immunosuppression and systemic conditions, salivary gland biology and dysfunction; head and neck cancers, health disparities; dental practice based research; epidemiology; behavioral and social sciences research; orofacial pain and temporomandibular joint disorder; mineralized tissue physiology; dental materials and biomaterials; tissue engineering and regenerative medicine; and developmental biology, genetics and genomics.
