NIDCR  Scales Back Presence at Upcoming IADR/AADR MeetIADR logo ing
Due to the budget limitations caused by sequestration, NIDCR is scaling back its presence at the upcoming IADR/AADR meeting March 20-23 in Seattle. Only scientists scheduled to present in symposia or workshops or newer investigators making oral or poster presentations will be attending.  NIDCR deeply regrets that it cannot send its extramural program directors to staff the NIDCR booth and carry out their critical role in providing advice and consultation to investigators and prospective grantees. If you had an appointment scheduled to speak with an extramural program director, please call them directly to reschedule as a telephone call:
http://www.nidcr.nih.gov/Research/DER/ContactRA.htm

Despite its scaled back presence, a number of NIDCR sessions will proceed as planned. Among these are two sessions on the NIDCR 2014-2019 Strategic Plan.  One is on "Training the Next Generation of Oral, Dental and Craniofacial Researchers," to be held Wednesday, March 20th, from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. in room 3AB of the Convention Center. The other is a "Listening Session" that will take place Thursday, March 21st, from 3:15 - 4:45 p.m. in room 310 of the Convention Center. Participants are invited to share their candid opinions and ideas about future directions for the Institute with respect to future research approaches, areas of emphasis, needs, challenges and opportunities.

In addition, sessions on grant writing and training and career development will be held, as well as NIDCR-organized symposia, hands-on workshops, and lunch & learning sessions.  A listing of NIDCR events is found here:
http://www.nidcr.nih.gov/NewsAndFeatures/Calendar/CalendarListing03202013.htm

The National Dental Practice-Based Research Network and the IADR/AADR will host a "Saturday Workshop on Practice-Based Research in the National Dental PBRN: Connecting Clinical Researchers with Full-Time Practitioners for the Benefit of Both."  The workshop will bring together dental practitioners and clinical researchers to foster a collaborative environment to facilitate the conception, development, and implementation of PBRN studies.  Registration is free.  For additional information and to register, contact Lisa Waiwaiole: lisa.ann.waiwaiole@kpchr.org, or call 503-335-2454.

NIDCR 2014-2019 Strategic Plan Update
NIDCR Strategic Plan icon NIDCR has begun developing its 2014-2019 Strategic Plan.  We will post a Request for Information (RFI) on the NIDCR website in the coming weeks, soliciting input from all of the Institute's stakeholders, including researchers, educators, clinicians, patients and their advocates, and the general public. In addition to the two Strategic Plan sessions that will take place at the upcoming IADR/AADR meeting in Seattle, NIDCR will hold meetings on selected topics related to strategic planning over the summer. We expect to complete a draft of the Strategic Plan by Fall 2013, and to present the final plan to the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council in early 2014.

NIDCR Director's Report to the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council Provides NIDCR/NIH Snapshot

Wellcome Trust Director Sir Mark Walport Delivers David E. Barmes Global Health Lecture
Sir Mark Walport, Wellcome Trust DirectorWellcome Trust Director Sir Mark Walport delivered the 12th annual David E. Barmes Global Health Lecture on January 30, 2013.  His lecture was entitled "From John Snow to Genome Science."  Sir Walport provided a series of fascinating examples of how recent advances in genome science have allowed the modern equivalent of De Kriuf's Microbe Hunters to pinpoint the exact cause of an outbreak, track its spread within a hospital or around the globe, and better unravel the tricks that microorganisms use to evade detection and possibly resist antibiotics.  Of particular note, Sir Walport mentioned a fascinating study, published online in Nature Genetics on February 17, in which an international team of scientists sequenced ancient calcified dental plaque and compared the composition of oral microbiota then and now.  A paper well worth the read. View the videocast of his talk:

NIH Invites Comments/Suggestions on Implementation of Recommendations of the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director Working Group on the Biomedical Research Workforce
NIH has issued a time-sensitive Request for Information (RFI) inviting comments and suggestions on the implementation of recommendations made by the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director (ACD) Working Group on the Biomedical Research Workforce.  Responses are due by April 22, 2013.

In December 2010, the NIH Director charged a working group of the ACD with examining the future of the biomedical research workforce in the United States and recommending actions to ensure this workforce is sustainable.  In June 2012 they presented their findings and conclusions to the ACD at a federal advisory committee meeting open to the public. NIH leadership considered the recommendations and developed preliminary plans for their implementation that were then presented to the ACD at an open meeting in December 2012.  NIH is moving forward with implementation and is requesting input to inform the implementation plans in several areas.  Further details are found here:
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-13-045.html
Responses are sought from all stakeholders in the extramural community, including students, postdoctorates, scientists, scientific societies, and NIH grantee institutions, as well as from the general public. All comments must be submitted electronically via this website:
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfi_files/bio/add.cfm

NIH to Recruit Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity
As part of their recommendations, the ACD Working Group on Diversity in the Biomedical Research Workforce strongly supported the creation of a new position to lead NIH's effort to diversify the biomedical research workforce, a significant NIH-wide priority and an area of critical importance to biomedical research.  On January 10, NIH Director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., announced recruitment for this new position, the Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity.  In the interim, he has asked Roderic Pettigrew, Ph.D., M.D., to serve as the Acting Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity.  Dr. Pettigrew has been director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) since 2002.  He is serving in both positions while a nationwide search is conducted for the new chief officer.

NIH to Recruit Associate Director for Data Science
Based on the recommendations of the ACD Working Group on Data and Informatics, Dr. Collins also has announced plans to recruit for a new NIH leadership position focused on data science.  The Associate Director for Data Science will lead a series of NIH-wide strategic initiatives that collectively aim to capitalize on the exponential growth of biomedical research data, such as from genomics, imaging, and electronic health records.  Eric Green, M.D., Ph.D., director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, is serving concurrently as Acting Associate Director for Data Science while a search is conducted to fill the new position.

Changes to Public Access Policy Compliance Begin July 1
Note the following Public Access Policy changes for non-competing continuation grant awards with a start date of July 1, 2013 or beyond:
--NIH will delay processing of an award if publications arising from it are not in compliance with the NIH public access policy:
http://publicaccess.nih.gov/index.htm
--Investigators will need to use My NCBI to enter papers onto progress reports:
http://publicaccess.nih.gov/communications.htm
Papers can be associated electronically using the Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR) or included in the PHS 2590 using the My NCBI generated PDF report:

Method Patent Issued for Investigational New Class of Pain Medication
Euphorbia resiniferaThe U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently issued a patent to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services involving resiniferatoxin, or RTX, an experimental compound that represents a potential new class of drugs to alleviate the intractable pain that can occur in people with advanced cancer, severe arthritis, and other extremely chronic conditions.  The method patent specifically covers intrathecal administration of RTX, meaning its injection into the spine's thecal sac. Find out more:
