2020 - 2025 NIDCR Strategic Plan

The mission of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research is to improve the health of the nation through investments in research focused on dental, oral, and craniofacial (DOC) diseases including caries, periodontal disease, cancers, orofacial pain, craniofacial disorders, salivary gland disorders, rare diseases, and oral manifestations of systemic diseases.

To effectively accomplish this mission, NIDCR is drafting a strategic plan for fiscal years 2020-2025, which will help guide the Institute’s funding of research over the next six years. Strategic planning is used to establish priorities, set clear goals, and detail the actions needed to achieve them. A strategic plan helps NIDCR focus energy and resources to achieve a common set of goals with agreed upon outcomes.

In 2017, NIDCR launched NIDCR 2030, a visioning initiative in which we imagined a future where DOC health and diseases are understood in the context of the whole body, and research transforms how we promote health, treat disease, and overcome health disparities. To get us there, NIDCR needs your help in developing our 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.

NIDCR 2030 established five priority areas and accompanying goals, which are now being used to organize the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.

Strategic plan priority areas - Oral health & overall health; precision oral health; regenerative medicine; health disparities; diverse workforce.

NIDCR is asking for your input on these five priority areas and draft goals in the form fields below. The closing date for comments is August 15, 2019.

Oral Health + Overall Health
GOAL:  Oral health will be fully integrated into the study of overall health through a deeper and more complex understanding of the underlying biological, behavioral, and social factors that cause disease or support health in the DOC region and throughout the body.
Precision Oral Health
GOAL: Precision prevention, treatment, and public health interventions will be available to all people based on their unique variations in genetic, biological, behavioral, and social determinants of health.
Regenerative Medicine
GOAL:  Advance engineering of biocompatible DOC cells, tissues, constructs, and their functional integration into the host tissue microenvironment, and to support efforts aimed at endogenous healing and regeneration of host tissues.
Health Disparities
GOAL: Apply rigorous, multidisciplinary research approaches to overcome disparities and inequities in DOC health and disseminate and implement best practices to help advance the field.
Diverse Workforce
GOAL: Ensure that a strong and diverse research workforce is dedicated to improving DOC health.
