Position Description
The Office of the Clinical Director, Division of Intramural Research (DIR), National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), National Institutes of Health, invites applications from hospital-based Dentists for a full-time up to 4-year renewable Staff Clinician Position.
The NIDCR Office of the Clinical Director (OCD) encourages a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment that promotes the translation of basic research discoveries into clinical practices. The OCD oversees all clinical activities related to NIDCR's mission by providing management and administrative support for clinical research protocols; offering a dental consult service for the NIH Clinical Center patient population; supporting a Dental Clinical Research Fellowship; and conducting ground-breaking human clinical trials with an emphasis on rare diseases and diseases of high public health impact.
The Staff Clinician Dentist will:
- Provide routine dental care and consults, as well as research-focused oral evaluations to patients participating in research studies and clinical trials at the world-renowned National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, where over 1,500 human subject research protocols are conducted.
- Provide dental services in the outpatient Dental Clinic, in the main OR, or at bedside.
- Serve as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team and deliver routine and research-driven oral care, interacting closely with primary care providers and other members of the medical and dental teams (e.g., oral surgeons, periodontists, oral medicine/pathologist specialists, and dental clinical research fellows).
- Triage patient care needs, provide other consultative services as required, provide clinical backup for trainees, and share on-call responsibilities for the Dental Clinic.
- Provide routine dental care, restorative dentistry, oral biopsies, simple extractions, comprehensive oral examination, and phenotyping, and the collection of biospecimens for research studies.
- Support the training of clinical fellows and supervise dental technologists and hygienists.
- Support the NIDCR Clinical and Translational Research Program and work closely with all NIDCR clinical principal investigators in the Dental Clinic.
- Work with teams of clinical and basic scientists to support a strong collaborative research environment, participate in relevant research collaborations, and provide expertise where appropriate.
The Staff Clinician Dentist is encouraged to participate in study design, subject recruitment, and other aspects of research conduct. The Staff Clinician Dentist is expected to take initiative in learning and applying new techniques and technologies in the Clinic to advance the research goals and aims of investigators of the NIDCR and NIH collaborators.
Salary will be commensurate with training credentials and clinical experience. A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life, and long-term care insurance, as well as a Thrift Savings Plan, etc.) is available. Leadership opportunities are available.
Qualifications
- Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry degree from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body, or other dental school provided the education and knowledge is equivalent to that of an ADA-approved school.
- Applicants must have evidence of clinical competence in providing routine adult and pediatric dental care and proficiency in providing dental care in the outpatient, inpatient, and operating room settings, with demonstrated clinical activity within 2 years of this announcement.
- Additionally, clinical experience and competence in the recognition, diagnosis, and management of oral manifestations of systemic and infectious diseases is required and competence in dental care in medically compromised patients is crucial.
- Applicants must have completed a hospital-based residency (such as a General Practice Residency) in an institution accredited for such training or evidence of equivalent dental experience in medically complex patients, and have an active license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico.
Preference will be given to individuals with residency training and board certification with at least 2 years of hospital-based practice. Although not required, priority will be given to those who have formal training or experience in the conduct of human subject research. Experience with academic clinical care, clinical research or clinical trials, or intimate knowledge of the NIH and areas of clinical research noted above are highly desired.
