Microbial Receptors

John Cisar, Ph.D., Chief

Research in the Microbial Receptors Section focuses on the identification and characterization of bacterial surface components that mediate primary colonization of the tooth surface, dental plaque biofilm formation and the initiation of inflammation at surrounding sites. Specific research interests include structural and molecular characterization of streptococcal receptor polysaccharides and closely related pneumococcal capsular polysaccharides, adhesins of gram-positive oral bacteria and cell surface glycoside hydrolases that function in cooperative degradation and utilization of salivary glycoconjugates for biofilm growth and development.
