This broad recruitment program of tenure-track investigators (assistant professor equivalent) for the NIH Intramural Research Program offers a variety of basic and translational/clinical positions. Applicants must have an M.D., Ph.D., D.D.S./D.M.D., D.V.M., D.O., R.N./Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree and have an outstanding record of research accomplishments as evidenced by high quality publications in peer-reviewed journals. Applicants should be non-tenured scientists. Appointees may be U.S. citizens, resident aliens, or non-resident aliens with, or eligible to obtain, a valid employment-authorization visa.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit four items (the first three documents must be in PDF format):

  • A cover letter (up to two pages in length), which must include in the first paragraph one or two (no more than two) NIH-defined research areas, and a clearly labelled section describing your past, present and/or planned activities to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in biomedical research.
  • A curriculum vitae, which should include a complete list of research publications and a description of your leadership, mentoring, and outreach activities, especially those involving women and persons from racial/ethnic or other groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research. 
  • A four-page research plan that outlines the research you hope to perform at NIH in the next five years and its innovative nature, as well as your long-term (20-year) vision for what you hope to achieve for yourself, your field, and society, as well as a description of your mentoring philosophy.
  • Contact information (including email address) for three professional references. Submit these through the online application system by September 30 (11:59 p.m. EDT).

Requests for letters of recommendation will be emailed to your references automatically when you submit your application. Reference letters must be submitted by replying to the automated email they will receive. Reference letters are due by October 7 (11:59 p.m. EDT). Reference letters must also be submitted in PDF format. We cannot accept paper applications. DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR BIRTH DATE OR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER ON APPLICATION MATERIALS.
