Program Description

Provides support to trainees to conduct their doctoral thesis research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland under the guidance and direction of a senior investigator who will serve as the trainee's mentor. The program is available to students who are enrolled in doctoral programs in the biomedical sciences in accredited U.S. universities. Fellowships are granted for one-year periods to support full-time training in NIH laboratories. The maximum duration of a fellowship will normally be three years or until the student receives the doctoral degree, whichever comes first. The stipend ranges depending on experience. U.S. citizenship or permanent residence is required.

Eligibility
  • Individuals must have received a doctoral degree within the previous three years: Ph.D., D.D.S. (or equivalent), D.V.M., M.D., M.D./Ph.D., D.V.M./Ph.D., D.D.S./D.M.D. or equivalent/Ph.D.
  • Individuals currently in Ph.D. or other doctoral degree programs may apply as long as they anticipate completing their degree requirements within one year of starting the fellowship.
  • U.S. citizens and non-citizens are welcome to apply for this fellowship.
  • Individuals must have a potential NIDCR laboratory assignment and investigator with whom to work.
  • Incoming or current intramural NIDCR postdoctoral fellows within the first 24 months of their appointment at NIH are welcome to apply.

Award Benefits

The Park Fellowship will include salary support commensurate with experience (and within NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship Guidelines), additional funds for lab supplies and consumables, and domestic travel support to attend one scientific conference per year.

Applicants must submit their Curriculum Vitae (CV), a cover letter, and the names and contact information of three references. Applicants should include the following elements in the cover letter:

  • Prior research experience, research interests, and career goals
  • Description of how the applicant’s participation in the Park Fellowship will assist the program in achieving its stated goal of strengthening mentorship within the dental, oral, and craniofacial research enterprise
  • Description of previous leadership and mentoring experiences in school and/or the community
  • Potential NIDCR laboratory assignment and investigator with whom to work
  • A brief research plan
  • Letter of support from the assigned NIDCR principal investigator (PI) or lab/branch chief stating their agreement with the applicant’s participation in the program
