DOC Precision Medicine Program

Overview

The Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial (DOC) Precision Medicine Program supports research designed to identify the genetics and genomics underlying health, diseases, and conditions of the DOC complex. The program supports research that applies human and clinical genetics, multi-omics, systems biology, and data science approaches to achieve a holistic understanding of disease mechanisms and the interplay of genetic and other factors underlying DOC biology and health. Relevant research topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Discovery of genes and genetic variants using candidate gene, genome-wide, epidemiologic, or family-based approaches, with functional characterization
  • Multi-omic analyses applying data science methods (e.g., machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence) for identification of risk variants, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets
  • Development of methods and tools to assess individual- and population-level DOC disease risk, including polygenic risk scores and biometrics-based predictive models
  • Systems biology approaches for integrating ‘omics and other relevant patient data to map causal networks to achieve a holistic understanding of disease mechanisms and the interplay of factors underlying DOC biology and health
  • Development and validation of precision tools for early and reliable detection and diagnosis of DOC disorders, as well as systemic disorders with distinct craniofacial features
  • Translational strategies for gene-based and targeted precision therapeutics for congenital DOC disorders
  • Research on bioethics and ELSI (ethical, legal, and social implications) issues relevant to genetics, genomics, and precision therapies for DOC conditions
