Immunomodulatory Oral Science Program
Overview
The Immunomodulatory Oral Science Program encourages pre-clinical and translational research on immune aspects of Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial (DOC) diseases, including oral lesions and periodontal disease. Innovative approaches to address oral diseases sequelae in the context of systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pulmonary and autoimmune problems are also of interest. The program encourages translational research in the following areas:
- Innovations in oral immunity and chronic inflammation in the context of overall health
- Inclusion of novel alternative models (NAMs) to utilize and modulate DOC specific responses with demonstrable relevance to the human condition
- Immune responses of microbial, biomaterials, and tissue engineering approaches
- Immunomodulatory approaches to harness oral mucosal responses and deploy oral vaccination strategies
- Expansion of antimicrobial and protective factors in oral fluids and on the oral mucosa for immune resilience
- Advances in translating barrier immunity of the mouth through host immune resilience and inflammation resolution of biological and host responses
- Approaches to suppress destructive immune responses associated with host inflammatory reactions
- Research to advance oral mucosal immunity as a therapeutic strategy in people that live with HIV
