Salivary Glands & Rheumatic Disease Program

Overview

The Salivary Glands and Rheumatic Disease Program encourages basic and translational research on saliva and salivary gland biology and immune aspects of dry mouth and oral diseases. Mechanistic understanding of oral disease sequelae in the context of systemic autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and psoriasis are also of interest. The program encourages research in the following areas:

  • Sjögren’s Disease, xerostomia, and salivary gland dysfunction
  • Age-related, disease-related, drug-induced and radiation-induced changes in salivary gland function
  • Salivary gland morphogenesis and structure and control of salivary gland function
  • Salivary gland as a molecular portal for detecting and improving systemic health
  • Salivary biomarkers, diagnostics and oral health surveillance
  • Evaluating and understanding the interplay between autoimmune disease and dental, oral, and craniofacial health
