Join NIDCR and the American Dental Association (ADA) for a webinar series, Putting Prevention into Action, in observance of National Children’s Dental Health Month. 

Community water fluoridation continues to be one of the most effective, cost-efficient, and socially equitable ways to promote oral health. This webinar will feature a panel discussion on current research on the effectiveness of community water fluoridation, the relationship between fluoride and neurocognitive development, and future directions of fluoride-related research. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentations. Health professionals are eligible to receive continuing education credit.

Speakers

Dr. Christopher Delecki.

Christopher Delecki, D.D.S., M.P.H., M.B.A.
Dr. Delecki is the chair of ADA’s National Fluoridation Advisory Committee and the chair of the HPV Stakeholders Group. He recently retired as the director of the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic Dental Program at Seattle Children’s Hospital and affiliate associate professor in the departments of Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Surgery at the University of Washington School of Dentistry.

Dr. Jay Kumar.

Jay Kumar, D.D.S., M.P.H.
Dr. Kumar is the State Dental Director at the California Department of Public Health. Before his appointment, he held several positions at the New York State Department of Health from 1980 to 2015. In addition to his research assessing the impact of community water fluoridation, Dr. Kumar was influential in formulating guidelines for fluorides, sealants, dental care for pregnant people, and infection control in dental offices.

Dr. Scott Tomar.

Scott Tomar, D.M.D., Dr.P.H.
Dr. Tomar is a professor and Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry. He served as an epidemic intelligence service officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is a diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health. He has served as the president of the American Board of Dental Public Health and the Oral Health Section of the American Public Health Association.

Activity Objectives

After participating in this activity, learners will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Understand current research on the effectiveness of community water fluoridation in preventing dental decay.
  2. Recognize the limitations of research on neurocognitive effects and fluoride exposure.
  3. Identify future directions for research on community water fluoridation and caries prevention, as well as fluoride exposure and children’s intelligence.
