Implementing the NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy at NIDCR – Information for Investigators and Institutions

For general questions about the DMS Policy and its implementation at NIH, please refer to the NIH Data Sharing website and the associated FAQs.

For Extramural Researchers

Links to Key Resources

  • Writing a DMS plan
  • Budgeting for data management and sharing

Important to Consider During Plan Development

  • What data types are being generated that are considered scientific data?
Data sharing and management for each data type will need to be described in the DMS plan.
  • Where will each data type be deposited?
Appropriate destination repositories may be discipline-specific, data-type specific, generalist, or hybrid. Repository staff may be key informational resources.
  • What is the timeline for data deposition?
All data are expected to be shared at publication or end of the performance period, whichever comes first. In order to support planning and budgeting as well as evaluation and reporting, it may be useful to consider or present the data sharing timeline aim-by-aim.

For Intramural Researchers

For guidance on implementation for the intramural community, see the Office of Intramural Research site devoted to the 2023 Data Sharing and Management Policy.
