Dental Clinical Resident Program

Oral Surgery Training Rotation Program (Washington Hospital)

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center (WHC) has established an Oral Surgery Training Rotation Program in collaboration with NIDCR at the NIH campus. This program provides WHC residents with unique training and educational opportunities in oral surgery and clinical research.

Educational Goals and Objectives

The program aims to expand WHC residents' clinical research background and enhance their skills in managing complex medical cases. Through participation in NIDCR clinical protocols and seminars, residents will gain experience with rare diseases and collaborate with specialists from various NIH departments.

Joshua J. Emrick, D.D.S., Ph.D.

“My time with the Dental Clinical Resident Fellowship Program was formative and some of the most fun I've had as a scientist. The program was instrumental in developing my research program, obtaining extramural funding, and making the transition to a tenure-track faculty position at the University of Michigan.”

Program Structure and Oversight

The WHC Program Director and the NIDCR Clinical Director will jointly oversee the program, ensuring adequate supervision and guidance for participating residents. The WHC Program Director will select residents for the program and coordinate assignments, durations, duties, and responsibilities in collaboration with the NIDCR Affiliate Site Director.

Resident Assignments and Rotations

Up to six WHC residents will be selected for the program each year, with a balance of second- and fourth-year residents. Assignments will include resident information, training dates, licensure, and areas of clinical and research interest. Each rotation will last two months, with residents reporting to the NIDCR Dental Clinic one day per week.

Duties and Responsibilities

Residents will provide consultations and perform minor oral surgery procedures under the direct supervision of attending oral surgeons. Emphasis will be placed on dentoalveolar procedures for complex, medically compromised patients. All patient interactions will be governed by the terms of the Graduate Medical Education Master Affiliation Agreement between WHC and the NIH Clinical Center.

Evaluation and Feedback

Residents will complete evaluation forms on their experiences at NIDCR, providing valuable feedback for program improvement.

The Oral Surgery Training Rotation Program at the NIDCR Dental Clinic offers WHC residents a unique opportunity to advance their clinical and research skills in oral surgery, preparing them for successful careers in academic and clinical practice.
